Our Fly Fishing Guides

Clay Benfield

Clay grew up in the small town of Morganton, North Carolina. At a young age he was introduced to fly fishing by his uncle. From then on he explored the mountain streams of the Pisgah National Forest and surrounding areas. Clay moved to the NC High Country in 2005 to live the easy-going mountain lifestyle and pursue his love of fly fishing. As an avid climber, backpacker, and fishermen Clay is always looking for the next big adventure. He began fly fishing on small farm ponds after receiving a fly rod for Christmas at age 13 and quickly graduated to small streams and rivers. He resided on the headwaters of the Tallulah River for almost a year, where he pursued trout on North Georgia and North Carolina streams nearly every day before deciding to move to the High Country five years ago. He has guided for wild trout on small streams in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee as well as both the New River and Nolichucky River for smallmouth.

Matt Maness

Matt grew up fishing the lakes and ponds in the Piedmont around the Raleigh area. From the time he could hold one he had a fishing rod in his hand, and when he turned 10 his father introduced him to the world of fly fishing. He was taught how to fly fish in the Wilson Creek area and after he caught his first trout his passion for fly fishing began. Over the years Matt explored more and more streams and rivers both in NC and TN; he has also made his mark out west fishing in Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.

Pace Cooper

Pace was born in Atlanta, Georgia where, believe it or not, he caught any fish within a 2 mile radius. At 7 years old, he attended a week long fishing camp on Lake Seminole in southern Georgia where he first used a fly rod. Bass and bream were his primary targets with a few Georgia shell-crackers to spice things up. Pace attended the University of Georgia and studied zoology. He moved to Boone in 1993 so he could be closer to his passions like rock climbing and mountain biking. He loved the High Country so much, he stayed and attended graduate school at Appalachian State for several years studying saw-whet owls.
